Through the use of satellite imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and advanced data visualisation techniques, modern tools have revolutionised our perception and understanding of the planet. The Earth’s landscapes can now be captured and analysed with unprecedented precision and detail.

MOL draws inspiration from the United States Air Force’s historic Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) program. This graphic essay aims to reimagine the objectives and technological aspirations of the original MOL programme, transforming satellite surveillance into an art form. It highlights the intersection of technology, exploration, and environmental observation.

Utilising satellite imagery from the SENTINEL-1 satellite, the project presents a collection of high-resolution views that capture the intricate details of our planet’s surface. These images echo the reconnaissance missions initially intended for national security purposes, yet MOL focuses on the aesthetic and contemplative aspects of satellite photography. It portrays Earth as both a subject of scientific inquiry and an object of artistic admiration.

Accompanying the visual exhibition is a narrative that delves into the historical context of the MOL programme, exploring its goals, technological innovations, and eventual cancellation. This narrative also encourages reflection on the evolution of satellite observation, the ethical dimensions of surveillance, and the conceptual possibilities of satellite imagery, while celebrating the profound beauty of our planet from above.

BRAINS retraces the captivating history of neuroimaging—the visualisation of the brain’s structure, function, and biochemical activity—by illustrating the evolution of techniques used to represent the brain over the centuries.

Neuroimaging has significantly advanced from its early beginnings, transforming our ability to diagnose neurological conditions, map brain activity, and guide surgical procedures. From the initial anatomical drawings to today’s high-resolution imaging technologies, the field has made remarkable strides, enabling real-time observation of brain activity and tracking of neural pathways.

Beginning with foundational methods like X-rays and the pioneering use of electroencephalography (EEG), neuroimaging has progressed to sophisticated technologies such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Each technological leap has enhanced our understanding of the brain’s intricate architecture (structure) and its dynamic processes (function), providing deeper insights into the workings of the nervous system.

	CHISPA—Nervous System of a City

collection: GRAPHIC ESSAYS
areas: electricity/architecture—by: NeurAstra/Les Nouveaux Cosmiques
SYSTEMS: (S02) Altanube Pando / CASSINI Tours
—exhibition: finished
venue: Sumsi Gallery, Valencia, Spain release: 2018—

The Spanish word “chispa”—a spark in English—refers to a small, fiery particle that is produced when a flammable material ignites or when two hard objects strike each other, creating a small burst of light. It could also be used metaphorically to describe a spark of creativity.

To appreciate the real dynamism of the city, we must envision it as a living, breathing organism pulsating with energy. Every street, every building, and every wall are interconnected by an intricate web of electrical installations and wires, materialising an elaborated network of electrical impulses innervating the urban environment.
As unnatural as these installations are, they are not so different from the functioning of the nerves that constitute the human nervous system. Just as nerves transmit signals to and from different parts of the body, urban wires transmit electrical power throughout the entire city, connecting its different neighbourhoods. In both the human nervous system and urban electrical infrastructure, there is for sure an underlying meaning within an apparent chaos.Usually hidden and invisible to the naked eye, the cables are omnipresent in Valencia, slicing the landscape in colour swatches and invading the textured facades with their black webs. They can display abstract shapes or form a distinctive pattern; they can be organised or intertwined, raw or painted, and sometimes all at once. Still, beyond their simple appearance and functionality, these tangled wires embody the development of a technology that changed the face and habits of the city.

“The more we know about the universe, the more we learn about ourselves.”— Living and Working in Space

S.H.E.L.L. (Space Habitats and Everyday Life in Low-earth orbit) is a graphic essay that explores the unique and often overlooked facets of daily life aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This project aims to highlight the routine activities, personal experiences, and human interactions of astronauts living and working in the extraordinary environment of space, showcasing how everyday life continues amidst the rigours of space exploration.

Life aboard the ISS involves a range of adaptations to address the challenges posed by microgravity. Ordinary tasks become complex due to the absence of gravitational force, necessitating innovative solutions to maintain daily routines.

Meal Preparation: Preparing meals in space requires specialised equipment. Food is generally consumed in a semi-liquefied or packaged form to prevent crumbs and spills, which could interfere with the spacecraft’s electronics or pose choking hazards. Astronauts and cosmonauts use rehydration systems to prepare dehydrated foods and magnetic trays to keep utensils and food items in place. Eating in microgravity means that astronauts must carefully manoeuvre their food to their mouths and use straws for liquids.

Personal Hygiene: Maintaining personal hygiene is another challenge in the microgravity environment. Water cannot simply flow as it does on Earth, so astronauts use rinseless wipes, no-rinse shampoo, and air showers for cleaning. Waterless washing systems, including rinseless soap and disposable towels, help manage cleanliness. A specially designed vacuum toilet helps with waste management, using airflow rather than gravity to assist in the process.

Scientific Experiments: Conducting experiments in space involves rigorous protocols to manage the unique conditions of the ISS. The lack of gravity allows for studies that cannot be conducted on Earth, such as fluid dynamics and combustion research. Scientists use advanced apparatuses like microgravity platforms and specialised containers to study the effects of space on various materials and biological processes. Results from these experiments contribute to our understanding of fundamental science and potential applications for future space missions.

Leisure Activities: Despite the demanding schedule, astronauts also have time for leisure and recreation. This includes watching films, reading books, and conducting personal video calls with family and friends.
Physical Activities: Physical exercise is vital for counteracting the effects of prolonged weightlessness on muscle and bone density. The ISS is equipped with a treadmill, a stationary bicycle, and a resistance exercise device to help astronauts maintain their physical health.

Duties and Maintenance: Keeping the ISS operational is a critical responsibility for astronauts. Routine duties include conducting maintenance and repairs, which can range from fixing leaks and malfunctioning systems to replacing worn-out components. Astronauts are trained to handle various technical issues and perform scheduled inspections of vital systems, including the life support system and power generation equipment. Installing new equipment is also a part of their duties, often requiring precise procedures and modifications to integrate new modules or scientific instruments into the existing station infrastructure. These tasks ensure the station remains functional and continues to support ongoing research and daily living.

Sleep: Sleep is a crucial component of the astronauts’ routine, essential for their health and performance. Given the lack of a natural day-night cycle in space, the ISS operates on a schedule with designated sleep periods to simulate a regular day. Astronauts sleep in individual sleeping quarters, designed to minimise disturbances and provide a degree of privacy. Sleeping bags are attached to the walls to prevent floating while sleeping, and the quarters are equipped with ventilation and lighting controls to create a restful environment. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is vital to manage circadian rhythms and ensure optimal cognitive and physical functioning.

Human Interactions: Social interactions aboard the ISS are crucial for maintaining mental well-being. Crew members live in close quarters, requiring effective communication and teamwork. The confined environment necessitates conflict resolution strategies and support systems to ensure a harmonious living situation.

By highlighting these aspects, S.H.E.L.L. underscores how space travellers aboard the ISS adapt to the unique demands of space living. The graphic essay reveals the continuity of human routines, habits, and experiences, even in the most extraordinary circumstances.

STS-51-F launched on this day in 1985, carrying carbonated beverages into space for the first time. Coke and Pepsi had to develop a can that would work in weightlessness to keep the cola fizzy without spewing out of the can. It appears that neither won the taste test, however, as the astronauts said the cola was too foamy to be tasty.

	SEURAT—The Words of the Sky

collection: GRAPHIC EXPERIMENTS
areas: meteorology/typography—by: NeurAstra/Les Nouveaux Cosmiques
SYSTEM: (S04) Poutchka Patrol
—

It was while observing the sky and its periodic celestial phenomena that the idea emerged: allowing the unpredictable nature of the wind to inspire our creative process.

We envisioned how the wind writes its passage across the vast blue canvas of the sky, sculpting clouds with its subtle presence. A brief trail forms here, while a ghostly haze fades away there. The sky constantly conveys its mood to us, terrestrial observers, but we are often too busy to decode its messages.

On a beautiful summer morning, we set up our equipment in a cornfield at an altitude of 874 meters, with a humidity level of 49% and a wind speed of 11 km/h. Lying on the ground with our eyes fixed on the sky, we let the unpredictable nature of the wind guide our creative process while our anemometer recorded its movements. For six hours, we meticulously logged every breath of wind, capturing precise data on wind direction, strength, and the duration of each gust in real-time.

Once the data collection phase was complete, we analysed the recorded information to transform it into visual elements. Wind direction was represented by different shapes, while wind strength influenced the size or intensity of the visual dots. The duration of each gust determined how long each visual element remained on the screen. Using this data, we created a series of dynamic animations where the visual representation evolved according to the recorded wind patterns. These animations reflected the subtle changes in the wind’s behaviour throughout the observation period.

The visual patterns generated from these animations formed the basis of our unique alphabet, SEURAT. By translating the telemetric data into a visual language, we developed a system that allows us to “read” the sky’s messages as expressed through the wind’s movements. Each visual element in the SEURAT alphabet corresponds to specific wind parameters, creating a form of communication that translates natural phenomena into a comprehensible artistic language.

“Music does not limit itself to the world of sound. There exists a music of the visual world.”— Oskar Fischinger

A sound is suddenly a shape, a harmony is a colour; there are no rules with synesthesia, only experiences. This project embodies the concept of NoFi music, where traditional visual fidelity is deliberately set aside to explore abstract interpretations. This collection of artworks was driven by the music sensation, the brushes’ inspiration, and, of course, there was almost no visual fidelity to the original visual identity of the tracks selected here; this is NoFi music.

The series draws inspiration from synesthesia, a neurological condition where stimulation of one sensory pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in another. In the case of musical synesthesia, the auditory stimulus (music or sounds) triggers a visual experience. Chromesthesia is the most common form of musical synesthesia. Colours can be seen when listening to music or specific sounds. Different notes, pitches, or instruments might even be associated with different colour nuances. With spatial sequence synesthesia, music can be perceived as shapes, forms, or patterns in space. Also, instead of or in addition to colours, some synesthetes might experience textures or forms. For example, a piece of music might evoke a sensation of smoothness, roughness, or specific three-dimensional forms.

NoFi was conducted as an experiment involving one synesthete and ten non-synesthetes to explore how famous tracks, from The Who to Grace Jones, could be visually interpreted. This exploration utilised a diverse array of materials—from traditional pens, brushes, and collages to advanced digital tools like Photoshop. The goal was to create varied textures and complex visual effects that capture the essence of the music in a new, abstract form.
Once the visual textures and effects were prepared, they were proposed as potential covers for compact disc albums. This process aimed to translate the synesthetic experience into visual art, showcasing how different individuals perceive and represent music. The artistic vision behind NoFi was to explore how scientific phenomena like synesthesia can inspire creative expression.
Discover the full collection to see how music has been reimagined through the lenses of both synesthetes and non-synesthetes here. Each artwork serves as a testament to the dynamic and multifaceted nature of how we experience and visualise music.

	.formation—Playing with Incongruity

.formation is an interactive experiment inspired by the natural physiological phenomenon called the “N400 wave”. The aim is to examine how our brains detect and react to sensorial incongruities.

The N400 wave is an event-related potential (ERP) component that is triggered when the brain encounters information that deviates from expected patterns, whether in language, music, or visual mediums. It typically appears as a negative deflection in the EEG signal approximately 400 milliseconds after the presentation of a stimulus (hence its name—N400).
This ERP is particularly well-studied in the context of language processing, where the N400 wave is elicited by words or sentences that are semantically incongruent or unexpected within a given context. For example, in the sentence “I take my coffee with cream and dog”, the word “dog” would generate a pronounced N400 response due to its semantic incongruity.
In addition to language, the N400 wave can also be observed in other cognitive domains. In music, it can be elicited by harmonies or melodies that violate listeners’ expectations. Similarly, in visual processing, the N400 is triggered by images or scenes that do not conform to the anticipated pattern or context. The amplitude and latency of the N400 wave provide valuable insights into the cognitive processes underlying meaning construction and expectation violation. A larger N400 amplitude indicates greater semantic incongruity, while variations in latency can reflect differences in processing speed.
The study of the N400 has contributed significantly to our understanding of how the brain integrates and interprets information, making it a critical marker in both cognitive neuroscience and psycholinguistics. Research on the N400 wave has expanded our understanding of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including dyslexia, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease, where deviations in N400 responses can indicate abnormalities in cognitive processing.

Building on this understanding of the N400 wave, we designed our project playing with the concept of surprise and unexpectedness in a controlled artistic environment. We arranged a piece of music following a familiar chord progression and melody, leading our audience to anticipate a particular resolution. However, at the crucial moment, the music element diverged from the expected outcome, introducing an auditory incongruity that triggered the N400 response. We monitored our audience’s responses using an EEG cap and electrodes placed on participants' scalps. The electrodes were connected to an EEG amplifier that enhanced the weak electrical signals before sending them to an EEG machine for recording. A specialised software was used to display, analyse, and store the recorded brain activity. The EEG recordings were later transformed into visual patterns using the software Procreate and arranged for visual purposes with Photoshop.
To create the visual art, we began by analysing the EEG data to identify the moments where the N400 response was most pronounced, representing the brain’s reaction to unexpected auditory elements. These data points were then transformed into visual patterns that reflect the concept of surprise and cognitive dissonance. Using Procreate, we experimented with abstract shapes, colours, and textures to represent the fluctuating amplitude and frequency of the brain waves, capturing the dynamic nature of the neural activity. Photoshop was used to layer and manipulate these patterns, creating a visual rhythm that mirrors the auditory anomalies in the music. The final visual compositions were deliberately designed to evoke a sense of tension and unpredictability, allowing viewers to experience the same cognitive engagement as the original auditory stimulus.
The artistic vision behind the project was to explore how scientific phenomena, like the N400 wave, could inspire new forms of creative expression. By deliberately crafting moments of surprise and unpredictability within a familiar musical structure, we aimed to challenge the audience’s expectations and provoke an unconscious neural response. This interplay between expectation and disruption was not only a scientific experiment but also a deliberate artistic choice designed to evoke a unique emotional and cognitive experience. The transformation of EEG data into visual art was intended to mirror these auditory “anomalies,” creating a dynamic, multisensory journey that invites viewers to reflect on the nature of perception, meaning, and surprise. Through this fusion of neuroscience and art, the project sought to push the boundaries of how we understand and engage with both fields.

The visual results, mimicking the auditory incongruity and “anomalies”, were later used to prepare the cover album and artworks for the LP “.formation” by the musical band The Pawn Structure. The album was crafted to visually embody the same themes of surprise and expectation that drive the auditory experience of the LP. The visual patterns derived from the EEG recordings were chosen to reflect the moments of auditory incongruity—when the brain encounters the unexpected shifts in music.

“(...) When literature is not enough to assure me that I am not merely chasing dreams, I seek in science what I need to feed my visions where all heaviness vanishes... Today, it seems to me that all branches of science aim to show us that the world rests on extremely subtle entities: such as the messages of DNA, the impulses of neurons, the neutrinos wandering through space since the beginning of time.”

In the 1930s, amidst the challenging conditions of the Mont-Blanc, a group of intrepid researchers braved the thin air, freezing temperatures, and treacherous terrain to construct a humble hut dedicated to studying cosmic rays.
Armed with rudimentary instruments and unyielding enthusiasm, they ventured into the rarified atmosphere to investigate the mysterious high-energy particles bombarding Earth from outer space. Their groundbreaking work in this remote laboratory not only advanced our understanding of cosmic rays but also paved the way for future discoveries in astrophysics and particle physics. After several years of diverse scientific research, this laboratory became a mountain hut named The Cosmiques Hut, welcoming explorers of a slightly different kind.

The scientist’s unwavering dedication and pioneering spirit in the face of adversity remain an enduring inspiration for the pursuit of knowledge, even in the most challenging of environments. NeurAstra started as a myriad of individual projects animated by the same passion and determination. We are now a small international team of scientists and explorers working on advancing our knowledge to apprehend our world and understand our place in the universe; we are les Nouveaux Cosmiques.
